Dutch Braided Yarn Twist Extensions

There's nothing like milking a hairstyle for all it's worth. And these yarn twist extensions are no exception. In fact, whenever you do a style that is in boxes, changing things up by braiding the boxes is always a stylish option. It preserves all the hard work of the original style while creating a whole new look. And the more mileage I can get out a style, the better in my book!

Today I decided to take Boo's yarn twists and put them into two Dutch braids. (Don't know how to Dutch braid? See instructions HERE.) If anyone has ever worked with a Barbie head or even the braiding practice board that I gave instructions for making, braiding with hair in boxes is pretty much the same concept. You're simply working with "plugs" of hair instead of individual hairs.

Knowing whether or not you're going to want to divide the hair into sections ahead of time really helps. That is, when creating your original boxes it's good to decide then whether or not you are going to want to part the hair down the middle for styles later on. That way you can line up your boxes accordingly. If you're not planning on parting down the middle (or you don't care if your parts are jagged) then a brick-pattern style to the boxes will be just fine.

For Boo's hair, I had a straight part in the front of her hair, and somewhat of a brick pattern in the back of her hair. Just because I had boxes that weren't lined up perfectly doesn't meant that her her can't be equally divided for this style (or any others that require a part down the middle). I just have to live with the fact that he part is a little jagged in the back. Turns out it wasn't really an issue for this style, especially since I pulled the braids together into one ponytail in the back, which covered a few of the jagged boxes.

Boo was thrilled with style. She was absolutely shocked that in less than 5 minutes she had a completely different hairstyle! It must have been some kind of record. It didn't really occur to her that I was just amending the style that she was already wearing; to her, it was a whole new look, one that she has already requested for the future because Mama "did it really fast!"
